Muin Smart Payments provides a unified payment infrastructure for your organization. Accept inbound payments through cards, ACH, NFC, Apple Pay, and Google Pay. Send outbound payments to vendors and contractors via Stripe Connect. All transactions flow through a single dashboard with real-time reporting and automatic reconciliation.

The 0.5% platform fee supports Muin infrastructure. Processing fees are passed through at cost with no markup.


Getting Started

Prerequisites

Before enabling payments:

  • Active Muin account with admin permissions
  • Business verification completed (EIN or equivalent)
  • Bank account for payouts

Enabling Smart Payments

  1. Navigate to Settings —> Payments
  2. Click Enable Smart Payments
  3. Complete business verification:
    • Legal business name
    • Tax identification number (EIN)
    • Business address
    • Authorized representative info
  4. Accept the Payments Terms of Service
  5. Click Submit for Review

Verification typically completes within 1-2 business days.


Connecting Payment Providers

Stripe Connection

Stripe powers card and NFC payments:

  1. Go to Settings —> Payments —> Providers
  2. Click Connect Stripe
  3. If you have an existing Stripe account:
    • Sign in and authorize Muin
  4. If you need a new account:
    • Follow the Stripe onboarding flow
    • Muin pre-fills your business details
  5. Configure payout schedule (daily, weekly, monthly)
  6. Click Complete Setup

After connecting, verify the integration:

Settings → Payments → Providers → Stripe → Test Connection

Stripe Financial Connections (ACH)

Stripe Financial Connections enables ACH payments and bank verification:

  1. Go to Settings —> Payments —> Providers
  2. Ensure Stripe is connected (Financial Connections is included with your Stripe account)
  3. Configure ACH settings:
    • Instant verification - Available for supported banks via Stripe Financial Connections
    • Micro-deposit verification - Fallback for unsupported banks
  4. Click Save Configuration

Crypto Payments (Coming Soon)

Cryptocurrency acceptance is coming soon. Once available, you will be able to accept Bitcoin, Ethereum, USDC, and other major cryptocurrencies with automatic USD conversion.


Accepting Inbound Payments

Card Payments

Accept Visa, Mastercard, American Express, and Discover:

  • Automatically enabled when Stripe is connected
  • Supports one-time and recurring charges
  • PCI compliant — card data handled entirely by Stripe (never touches Muin servers)
  • 3D Secure authentication for high-risk transactions

Express Checkout (Apple Pay & Google Pay)

Apple Pay and Google Pay are enabled automatically on all your Muin payment surfaces as soon as Stripe is connected — no additional setup required.

Device and browser eligibility:

  • Apple Pay — Safari on iPhone, iPad, or Mac (macOS Ventura or later with Touch ID / Face ID). The device must have a payment card set up in Wallet.
  • Google Pay — Chrome on Android or desktop, or any supported browser logged in to a Google account with a saved card.

Muin detects eligibility automatically and surfaces the wallet button only when the customer’s device supports it. Customers who don’t qualify see the standard card / ACH form instead.

Fees: Same as credit card — 2.9% + $0.30 processing fee plus the 0.5% platform fee.

ACH Payments

Accept direct bank transfers:

  1. Payer connects their bank account via Stripe Financial Connections
  2. Muin verifies the account (instant or micro-deposit)
  3. Payment initiates as ACH debit
  4. Funds settle in 3-5 business days

NFC Tap-to-Pay

Accept contactless payments in person using the Muin Go mobile app:

  • No external hardware required (phone acts as terminal)

Sending Outbound Payments

Vendor Payments

Pay vendors directly from Muin:

  1. Navigate to Payments —> Vendor Bills
  2. Select the vendor (or add new)
  3. Enter payment details:
    • Amount
    • Payment method (ACH, check, wire)
    • Memo or invoice reference
  4. Review and click Send

Scheduled Payments

Set up recurring or future-dated payments:

  1. When creating a payment, click Schedule
  2. Choose:
    • One-time future - Set a specific date
    • Recurring - Set frequency (weekly, bi-weekly, monthly)
  3. Configure start date and end date (or number of occurrences)
  4. Click Schedule Payment

The payment overview at Payments shows:

  • Total Volume - Payments processed this period
  • Inbound vs Outbound - Payment direction breakdown
  • By Method - Volume per payment method
  • Pending - Payments awaiting settlement
  • Failed - Payments requiring attention

  • PCI Compliant - Card data handled entirely by Stripe, a PCI DSS Level 1 certified processor (card data never touches Muin servers)
  • Preparing for SOC 2 - Security controls designed for SOC 2 compliance, with formal audit in progress
  • KYC via Stripe - Business verification handled through Stripe Connect onboarding
  • NACHA Rules - ACH compliance via Stripe

Fraud Prevention

Built-in AI-powered fraud detection analyzes transactions in real time for risk factors including amount anomalies, transaction patterns, and behavioral signals. High-risk transactions are flagged automatically via Stripe Radar and Muin’s AI analysis layer.

Data Protection

Troubleshooting

Payment Declined

If a payment is declined:

  1. Check the decline reason in transaction details
  2. Common reasons: insufficient funds, expired card, fraud block
  3. Contact the payer to retry with a different method
  4. Review fraud settings if legitimate payments are blocked

ACH Return

If an ACH payment is returned:

  1. Check the return code (R01 = insufficient funds, R02 = account closed)
  2. Contact the payer for updated bank information
  3. Retry if appropriate based on return reason
  4. Muin automatically updates the invoice status

Payout Delayed

If payouts are delayed:

  1. Check for pending identity verification
  2. Review account status in Stripe dashboard
  3. Verify bank account is active and correct
  4. Contact support if delays persist beyond 5 business days
