Membership Tiers and Giving Programs
Set up membership levels and the public join page, and define the giving programs that tell donors what their money is for.
Membership tiers are the levels people can join at. Giving programs are the purposes you report gifts against, and what a donor sees named on their receipt. They are separate questions, and this page covers both.
When you’d use this
- You are setting up annual membership and need levels, dues and benefits.
- You want a public page where people can join without calling the office.
- A donor’s receipt did not say what their gift was for.
- You are adding a Zakat appeal and need the program to be eligible.
Membership Tiers
Where it lives: there is no sidebar row. Open Sidebar → Nonprofit → Membership → Memberships and press Tiers in the page header. The screen is titled Membership Tiers. Adding and editing needs permission to manage memberships.
Creating a tier
- Press Add Tier.
- Enter the Name. This is required.
- Set a Code, Annual Dues, Monthly Dues and Currency.
- Add Benefits as repeatable rows. The card shows the first three plus a count of the rest.
- Set Max Members if the tier is capped.
- Turn on Family tier and set Max household members for a tier that covers a whole household.
- Set the Sort Order, turn Is Public on or off, and write a Description.
- Set the Grace Period (days) between 0 and 365. Leave it blank to use your organization’s default from membership settings.
- Press the submit button.
A tier with neither annual nor monthly dues is free, and the card shows Free.
Editing a tier adds one more option: a form binding, so you can attach signup questions members answer when they join.
Working the tier list
Filter by Status (All statuses, active, inactive, archived), search with Search tiers, and reorder the view with Sort tiers.
Each card shows the name, code, status, dues, description, the leading benefits, whether it is Public or Private, whether it is a Family tier, the member count against its cap (red when full), and the grace period. Card actions are Edit, QR, Deactivate and Reactivate.
Export CSV in the header downloads the tier list.
Deactivating a tier stops it accepting new members and removes it from the public signup page. Existing members keep their tier, and you can reactivate it at any time.
Renewals
Renewal happens on the Memberships screen, not here. Renewing extends the expiry by a year per year renewed, counted from the later of the current expiry or today in your organization’s timezone, sets the membership active, and records a dues contribution for the annual amount.
Muin sends renewal reminders automatically at 30, 14 and 7 days before expiry. An operator can resend a reminder, and a membership can be set to auto-renew.
Benefits and the deductible portion
When a member receives something of value for their dues, only the part above that value is tax-deductible. Muin holds a benefit fair-market value on the tier for exactly that reason, and a donor’s receipt and annual statement count membership dues at their deductible portion only, not the full amount. That value is not editable from this screen; set it with your finance team.
The public join page
Where it lives: press Design Page on Membership Tiers, or open the Membership Page card in Public Pages. You need permission to manage memberships.
This is one public enrollment page for your organization, at /go/{your-slug}/membership.
The editor has four tabs: Editor, Design, Analytics and Share.
On the Editor tab:
- Under Page Content, set the Page Title, the Page Description and the CTA Button Text.
- Under Display Settings, pick a Featured Tier to highlight, and turn on Show feature comparison table.
- With the table on and two or more active tiers, build the comparison rows.
- Watch the preview on the right as you type.
Pricing & Revenue holds a projection calculator you can play with. It is a scratchpad and is not saved.
Use the Design tab for branding and the Share tab for a QR code. Analytics on this page is not available yet.
There is no draft state. Saving puts the change live, and the editor also auto-saves every 30 seconds. Save with the top-bar Save button or Ctrl/Cmd+S.
What someone joining sees
- A tier priced both yearly and monthly shows a Billing choice, so the joiner picks how they pay. The button then reads Pay $X & Join or Pay $X/mo & Join. A tier priced only one way offers only that way.
- A tier at its Max Members cap shows Full and cannot be picked.
- A paid join saves the member’s card and turns on auto-renew, so the card is charged again at each renewal on the cadence they chose. This only happens while Allow members to opt into automatic renewal is on under Settings → Nonprofit → Memberships. Turn it off and new members join without auto-renew; existing members keep what they have.
- Members can renew early, or turn auto-renew on or off, from the donor portal. See Donor Self-Service Portal.
Giving Programs
Where it lives: Sidebar → Nonprofit → Giving → Giving Programs, next to Funds. You need permission to view programs, and permission to manage programs to add one.
A giving program is what the money is for. It is the name a donor recognizes on a receipt.
Giving programs are a different list from Services → Service Programs, on purpose. Service programs are what your organization does. Giving programs are what people can give to.
Fund, program, campaign and page
| Thing | The question it answers |
|---|---|
| Fund | Which spending rules apply to this money? An internal bucket. Most organizations need one or two. |
| Program | What is the money for? Shared across funds. This is what a donor sees. |
| Campaign | Why did it come in now? A time-limited appeal. It holds no money. |
| Giving page | How did it arrive? |
These four are independent of each other. A program can be funded from more than one fund, and a fund can pay for many programs. A fund name never appears on a donor-facing surface.
Creating a giving program
- Press New giving program.
- Enter the Name. This is required.
- Add an optional Description.
- Pick the optional Default fund.
- Tick Zakat-eligible (serves one of the eight asnaf) if the program qualifies. Read the warning before you do; it constrains how the money may be spent.
- Press the submit button.
The program is created live, so you can point a giving page at it immediately.
The table shows the program, its default fund, whether it is Zakat-eligible, and its status. Filter by status (All statuses, active, draft, paused, completed, cancelled). Click a row to open the full program editor.
What it affects
- A tier’s dues, cap, family setting and grace period govern what happens when someone joins or renews, and what the public join page offers.
- Deactivating a tier removes it from the public page immediately.
- Saving the join page editor goes live at once, with no publish step.
- The program on a giving page is what prints on the receipt, in the donor’s giving history and on their annual statement.
- Marking a program Zakat-eligible constrains disbursement: money cannot be spent out of a Zakat-eligible fund without a Zakat-eligible program.
When it goes wrong
“No tiers yet. Create your first membership tier to start accepting members.” Press Create Tier.
A tier card shows the member count in red, and signup is refused. The tier is at its Max Members cap. Raise the cap or close the tier.
“Maximum N household members for X tier.” A family tier has a household cap and the household is already at it. Raise Max household members on the tier, or move the person to their own membership.
A family tier is refused with no household. Family tiers need a household. Create the household first; see Households and Member Elections.
“No active tiers configured. Add membership tiers before designing the page.” The join page has nothing to show. Create and activate at least one tier.
“featured_tier_id must reference a membership tier owned by this tenant.” The featured tier was deleted or belongs elsewhere. Pick a current tier.
“Give the program a name.” The program name is required.
A program was saved but is not live. Muin says so: “… was saved but could not be made live, so donors cannot be pointed at it yet.” Open it from the list and activate it.
Online Giving flags “Make the program zakat-eligible”. A Zakat surface is pointing at a program that is not Zakat-eligible. Open the program and tick the eligibility box, or point the surface at a program that already qualifies.
Next step
Point a giving page at your new program and check the health strip: Set up Online Giving. To let supporters raise money for a program themselves, see Fundraising Pages and Event Announcements.
