Kiosk Authoring — Imagery
Upload a hero image or pick one of six branded fallback gradients for your kiosk. The kiosk uses whichever is set, with the gradient as a safe default.
The Imagery tab controls the visual canvas behind your kiosk content. You have two layers: a hero image (preferred when you have one) and a fallback gradient (used when no image is set, or while the image loads).
Hero Image
The hero image is the big visual at the top of every kiosk screen. It sits behind the headline and subtext, with a gradient overlay so the text stays readable.
Uploading
- Drag a JPG, PNG, or WebP file onto the drop zone, or click to pick.
- The file must be under 5 MB and at least 800 px wide.
- The upload completes in a few seconds. The preview pane updates immediately.
Image guidelines
- Aspect: 16:9 works best on phone, 4:3 on tablet portrait. The kiosk crops automatically via
object-fit: coverper form factor, so a wide image works everywhere. - Subject placement: keep faces and important detail in the center third — edges get cropped on smaller form factors.
- Brightness: dark or busy images compete with the headline. Aim for medium contrast in the center, where text overlays land.
- No text in the image. The platform overlays the campaign headline; a second baked-in headline duplicates and competes.
URL fallback
If your image lives elsewhere (a CDN, your own asset library), you can paste the URL directly into the URL input under the drop zone. The kiosk will fetch and cache it at session start.
URL-based images skip the upload validation, so make sure the URL serves a clean public image under 5 MB.
Fallback Gradient
Every campaign picks one of six branded gradients. The gradient is what shows when:
- No hero image is set
- The hero image fails to load (slow network, broken URL)
- The kiosk is in the brief moment before the image fetch completes
The Six Gradients
| Slug | Mood | Best For |
|---|---|---|
dawn |
Soft pink-orange | Hope, new beginnings, capital campaigns |
dusk |
Deep purple-blue | Reflection, end-of-year giving, gratitude |
radial-bloom |
Warm orange center | Joy, celebration, milestone moments |
parchment |
Cream and warm tan | Tradition, heritage, faith-based appeals |
prism |
Multi-hue rainbow | Youth, community, inclusion |
quiet |
Muted neutral | Memorial, somber, dignified appeals |
The picker shows all six as swatches. Tap one to select. The selection persists in the campaign and ships with the kiosk on the next sync.
Tenant theme override
If your kiosk theme has a primary_color set, the gradient picker uses your primary color, automatically desaturated for legibility (the platform clamps saturation to 0.55× and lightness to a readable range). Visitors see your brand color softened — never the harsh full-saturation version that would compete with content.
Tips
- Skip the hero on simple campaigns. A clean branded gradient often looks more polished than a generic stock photo.
- Test the same image across all three form factors. The preview shows phone + tablet — check both before publishing.
- Don’t upload logos as hero images. Logos render in the header band; the hero is for atmosphere and emotional context.
- Watch the file size. A 4 MB image takes longer to load on a fairground LTE connection than the gradient does to render — the gradient is your friend.
- Refresh after upload. If you replace an existing hero, the kiosks pick up the new version on their next config sync (typically within 60 seconds).
Common Issues
| Issue | Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Image looks washed out | Gradient overlay too strong | Choose a darker, more saturated image |
| Subject cropped off | Important detail at the edge | Re-crop the image with subject in center third |
| Image fails to load on the kiosk | URL fallback points to a private or expired link | Re-upload via the drop zone instead |
| Wrong gradient color | Tenant primary color override active | Adjust the theme’s primary_color in the Theme tab |
