Accepting Your First Donation
Set up online giving in Muin — enable payments, create a giving page, share it, and record your first donation with an automatic tax receipt.
This guide takes you from a fresh Muin account to your first recorded donation. By the end, you’ll have a live giving page accepting online gifts, and you’ll know how to record offline gifts (cash, checks) with automatic tax receipts.
Before You Start
Make sure you have:
- A Muin account with the Nonprofits module enabled (Settings → Modules)
- Admin or owner permissions
- For online giving: payments enabled (see Setting Up Your First Payment) — verification takes 1-2 business days, so start that early
- About 10 minutes
Recording donations manually doesn’t require payment setup — you can skip straight to Step 4 if you only need to track checks and cash today.
Step 1: Enable Payments (for online giving)
Online donations are processed through Smart Payments:
- Navigate to Settings → Payments
- Click Enable Smart Payments and complete business verification
- Connect Stripe when prompted — Muin pre-fills your organization details
Full walkthrough: Setting Up Your First Payment. Once connected, Apple Pay and Google Pay work automatically on your giving pages.
Step 2: Create Your First Giving Page
Giving Pages are shareable online donation forms with your branding.
- Navigate to Nonprofit → Giving Pages
- Click Create Giving Page
- Configure the page:
- Title and URL slug (e.g.,
annual-fund) - Fund to direct donations into (and an optional Campaign)
- Suggested amounts (e.g., $25, $50, $100, $250)
- Allow recurring giving so donors can set up monthly gifts
- A goal amount if you want a progress thermometer
- Custom thank-you message and automatic email receipts
- Title and URL slug (e.g.,
- Click Save to create the page as a draft
- Click Publish to make it live
Your page now has a public URL you can link from your website, emails, and social media.
Step 3: Share the Page
Two fast ways to put the page in front of donors:
Share the link — copy the page URL and add it to your website’s Donate button, email signatures, and newsletters.
Print a QR code — each giving page generates one:
- Open the giving page and click the QR Code tab
- Choose format (PNG or SVG) and size
- Enable Dynamic QR if you want to update the destination later without reprinting
- Download and add it to flyers, event signage, or bulletins
When a donor gives through the page, the contribution is recorded automatically, the donor is added to your donor directory, and a receipt is emailed if you enabled auto receipts.
Step 4: Record an Offline Donation
Checks, cash, and stock gifts are recorded manually:
- Navigate to Nonprofit → Contributions
- Click Record Contribution
- Enter the details:
- Donor — select from your directory or add a new person
- Amount, date, and type (cash, check, credit card, stock, etc.)
- Fund and optional Campaign allocation
- Enable Send Tax Receipt to generate and email the receipt on save
- Click Save
That’s your first donation in the books — it appears immediately in the contribution list, the donor’s profile, and your fundraising dashboards.
Step 5: See the Results
- Nonprofit → Overview shows totals across funds and campaigns
- The giving page’s own statistics show amount raised, donation count, and averages
- Each donor’s profile accumulates lifetime giving, segments (New, Regular, Major), and engagement scores automatically
Tips
- Set up funds before fundraising. Contributions allocate to funds — create your fund structure (General, Zakat, Building, etc.) first so every gift lands in the right bucket.
- Enable recurring giving on every page. Monthly donors give significantly more over time; the option costs you nothing.
- Use dedications. Donors can give in honor or in memory of someone — these details flow onto receipts automatically.
Common Issues
“My giving page isn’t accepting card payments.” Payments must be enabled and Stripe connected first (Step 1). Check Settings → Payments — verification may still be pending.
“The donor wasn’t emailed a receipt.” Check that auto email receipts is enabled on the giving page (or that you checked Send Tax Receipt when recording manually). You can re-send from the contribution detail.
“I need to split a gift across funds.” Open the contribution detail and click Manage Allocations — a single gift can split across up to 10 funds.
