Competitions
Run a recitation or school competition in Muin: categories and contestants, a scoring rubric, judges who score on their phones from a private link, a tally with tie-break rules, an announcer run-sheet, a reveal on your screens, winner emails and certificates.
A competition lives on a program: Program console, Competitions tab. You name it, pick the scoring rubric, add categories and contestants, and invite judges. Judges score on their phones from a private link, Muin adds the scores up by the rule you chose, and the results print as an announcer run-sheet in the order they are read out.
When you’d use this
- Your school runs a Qur’an recitation, memorization or speech competition with several judges.
- You want the scoring done on the day, without collecting paper sheets and adding them up by hand.
- You need the winners read out in a set order, shown on the hall screen, and told to families.
Who can do what
| Person | What they can do |
|---|---|
| Program director, coordinator or organization admin | Create and edit competitions, invite judges, lock and announce results |
| Staff who can read the program schedule | See competitions, the tally and the run-sheet, and download certificates |
| Judge | Open their own link and score. No Muin account is needed |
Someone without program management rights sees “Competitions are for program leaders” on the tab.
Set it up
- Program console, Competitions, New competition. Give it a name and a date, and pick a scoring rubric: the criteria each judge scores, and the most each is worth. Use Create rubric if you have none yet.
- Choose How scores add up, When two contestants tie, and how many Places awarded (1 to 10). A category can override the competition’s settings.
- Add category, for example Junior Qur’an recitation. Categories are read out in the order you list them.
- Add contestants to each category. Add from class brings in a whole class at once; you can also type a name for a walk-in entry.
- Invite judge with a name and, optionally, an email. Muin emails the link, or you copy it and send it by message.
- Start scoring. Scoring needs at least one category, one contestant and one judge.
How scores add up
Each judge’s scores for a contestant become one judge total, weighted by the rubric. The judge totals then combine by the rule you chose:
| Rule | What it does |
|---|---|
| Add up | Adds every judge’s total |
| Average | Takes the mean of the judges’ totals |
| Drop highest and lowest | Drops one highest and one lowest judge total, then averages the rest. Needs at least 3 judges |
| Even out strict judges | Compares each judge’s totals with their own other totals, so a strict judge and a generous judge count the same, then averages |
A contestant shows Waiting for scores until every active judge has scored every criterion. A contestant still waiting has no total and no place.
Breaking a tie
Ties are settled by the steps you set under When two contestants tie, in order:
- Higher score on a criterion you pick, for example tajweed.
- Highest single score from any judge.
- Decide by hand, where staff set the order in Set order.
Contestants still level after every step share the place and show Tied. A tie on a place you award must be settled before the results can be locked.
On the day: the judge’s phone
The judge opens the link, sees their name and the contestants, and scores each criterion between 0 and its maximum. Each score saves as soon as they leave the box, so a lost signal does not lose what was already saved.
After the results are locked, the judge sees “Scoring is closed” and their saved scores can no longer be changed. If you Turn off link for a judge, that judge sees “Link turned off” and can no longer score. Send again emails a judge their link again if they lost it.
Lock, run-sheet and announce
- Live tally shows each category’s ranking as scores arrive.
- Lock results freezes the results. The run-sheet, the screen reveal and the certificates all read these frozen results, so they always agree. Unlock returns to scoring and clears the frozen results.
- Run-sheet lists each category in your order, with places read 3rd, then 2nd, then 1st. Use Print run-sheet for paper or Phone view for the announcer.
- Announce marks the competition announced. This cannot be undone.
The reveal on your screens
A screen in Screens can carry the Competition winners widget. Pick Which competition to reveal, or leave it unset and the screen shows the most recently announced competition. Nothing is shown until the competition is announced.
Winner emails, certificates and pamphlets
- Winner emails. When you announce, the family of every placed contestant who is a student on record gets an email, if the Competition result parent message is turned on (it is off until you turn it on; see School communications). A walk-in entered by name only, or a withdrawn contestant, gets nothing.
- Certificates. All certificates downloads one certificate per winner as a PDF, or one category at a time. A single contestant has a Certificate button. Certificates are ready once results are locked.
- Pamphlet. A per-contestant summary PDF, from the contestant’s row.
When it goes wrong
| What you see | Why | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| “Drop highest and lowest needs at least 3 judges” | That rule needs three or more judges | Invite another judge, or pick another rule |
| Lock results is refused | A contestant is still waiting for scores, or a place you award is tied | Finish the scoring, or add a tie-break step or Set order |
| The run-sheet says it is ready once the results are locked | Results are not locked yet | Lock them on the Live tally |
| A judge sees “This link is not valid” | The link was mistyped or cut short | Copy the link again, or Send again |
| A judge sees “Scoring is closed” | The results are locked | Unlock if a score must change, then lock again |
| No family was emailed | The Competition result message is off, or the contestant was a walk-in | Turn the message on before announcing; walk-ins are never emailed |
| The hall screen is blank | The competition is not announced yet | Announce it; the screen shows it after that |
