This page lists every tool Muin’s MCP server exposes to connected AI assistants. All tools operate within the organization the connection belongs to. Eight tools need write access on the connection: nonprofit_record_contribution, which records a contribution; nonprofit_track_grant, which saves a grant to your pipeline; nonprofit_import_contributions, which imports a spreadsheet of past gifts; compliance_save_calendar, which saves your filing calendar with reminders; forms_create_form, which builds and publishes a form; workflows_transition, which advances a workflow; grants_suggest_org_profile, which spends a model call and a web search to draft your profile (it saves nothing); and agents_run, which starts an agent. Every other tool is read-only, and a read-only connection cannot call any of the eight.
Seven of them change your records, and those never run on the assistant’s say-so: nonprofit_record_contribution, nonprofit_track_grant, nonprofit_import_contributions, compliance_save_calendar, forms_create_form, workflows_transition and agents_run. A call returns a preview of the change and stores it in the person’s Inbox in Muin. It runs only when that person approves it in Muin, on the web or in the Muin Go app. A second call, a token or an accept clicked inside the assistant is not an approval; calling the tool again returns the change’s status instead of running it. A standing rule a person set in Settings > Approvals can approve routine changes in advance, but never a contribution, an import of gifts or any other money. See Approving Agent Changes.
Non-profit
Eleven tools, the largest family. All read-only except nonprofit_record_contribution, nonprofit_track_grant and nonprofit_import_contributions.
| Tool |
What it does |
nonprofit_fundraising_dashboard |
Goal-vs-raised, donation and donor counts, and thermometer progress for every active campaign, plus a tenant-wide summary |
nonprofit_list_contributions |
List contributions, filtered by fund, donor, status, date range, or amount |
nonprofit_get_fund_balances |
Fund balances grouped by restriction class, plus endowment detail |
nonprofit_donor_summary |
A single donor’s giving history, or the at-risk and lapsing list when no donor is named |
nonprofit_list_grants |
The grant pipeline: how many grants sit at each stage, the amount still in flight, and the newest grants with their status and the amounts requested and awarded |
nonprofit_990_summary |
IRS Form 990 readiness snapshot for a fiscal year (US organizations only) |
nonprofit_upcoming_events |
Verified upcoming public events and services |
nonprofit_draft_donation_receipt |
Draft the wording of a tax-receipt acknowledgment for review. It never persists a receipt and never sends an email |
nonprofit_record_contribution |
Mutating and requires write access. Returns a preview of a contribution against a donor and fund. The contribution is recorded only after a person approves it in Muin; a rule can never approve it |
nonprofit_track_grant |
Mutating and requires write access. Saves a grant the assistant found into your grant pipeline at the “identified” stage and starts Muin’s grant workflow. Saving the same title twice returns the grant already saved. Runs after a person approves it in Muin |
nonprofit_import_contributions |
Mutating and requires write access. Imports a spreadsheet of past gifts (date, amount and who gave). Gifts Muin already has are skipped, and every row it could not import is named. When the columns cannot be matched with confidence, nothing is imported and the answer links to Muin’s import review. Runs only after a person approves it in Muin; a rule can never approve it |
Grants
The same nine grant tools your agents and the in-app chat use. Every result names its source and the date it was read.
| Tool |
What it does |
grants_search_grant_opportunities |
Find grants that fit your organization from federal listings, state and local grant portals, official program pages and IRS records of funders who paid for similar work. Each grant names its funder, deadline, award range, link and source |
grants_read_program_page |
What an official program page said when it was last read: open, closed, upcoming, check the page, or unknown, with the date read, the deadline, the largest award and who may apply |
grants_lookup_funder |
One foundation by EIN or name: giving per year, typical and largest cash grant, donated goods shown separately, recent grantees, and whether it accepts unsolicited applications |
grants_lookup_org_filings |
An organization’s public Form 990 filings by EIN, newest year first: revenue, expenses, government grants, contributions, programs and officers |
grants_suggest_org_profile |
Requires write access. Draft your profile (mission, what you do, service area, annual budget, NTEE code) from your website and public filings. Returns suggestions with sources and saves nothing |
grants_lookup_public_statistics |
Published statistics about a place for a need statement, such as population, poverty, food insecurity or rent, each with its dataset, vintage and link |
grants_lookup_track_record |
An organization’s government funding track record by EIN: federal awards from USAspending.gov and the government grants each Form 990 reports |
grants_lookup_peer_benchmark |
Compare an organization with peers of the same state, field and size: revenue mix at the 25th percentile, median and 75th percentile, and the funders who paid those peers |
grants_check_apply_readiness |
Whether your organization is ready to apply: IRS tax-exempt status, annual filings, SAM.gov registration and state charity registration, each with its status and source |
Filing Deadlines
The Compliance Calendar’s tools. They are also their own Claude listing, Muin Compliance Calendar.
| Tool |
What it does |
compliance_preview_deadlines |
The year’s federal and state filing deadlines from your legal form, home state and fiscal year end, with who each is filed with and the late penalty where a state publishes one. Reads and saves nothing |
compliance_list_deadlines |
Your saved calendar: every filing due in the next year, the days remaining and which are overdue |
compliance_save_calendar |
Requires write access. Returns a preview of saving your facts and loading every filing they call for, with reminders 30, 7 and 1 days ahead. It runs only after a person approves it in Muin |
The Forms tools. They are also their own Claude listing, Muin Forms.
| Tool |
What it does |
forms_create_form |
Requires write access. Returns a preview of a form built from a title and a list of fields. Once a person approves it in Muin, the form is published and the answer gives its public link. Forms that take payments are built in Muin |
forms_list_forms |
Your forms with their status, public link and number of responses |
forms_list_responses |
The latest responses to one form, newest first, with the exact total |
Agents
| Tool |
What it does |
agents_run |
Requires write access and the agent permission. Returns a preview of starting one of your organization’s agents, by name or slug. The agent starts only after a person approves it in Muin; calling again returns whether it is still waiting, approved, rejected or expired |

workflows_list_templates |
List the workflow templates in your catalog |
Grounding
These tools return verified organizational facts, designed for assistants that answer public-facing questions:
| Tool |
What it does |
grounding_upcoming_events |
Verified upcoming public events, optionally filtered by topic |
grounding_org_profile |
Verified organization identity: name, address, phone, business hours |
grounding_document_search |
Semantic search over your indexed documents and knowledge base |
Error Behavior
- An unknown tool name returns a tool error naming the unknown tool.
- A missing document or invoice returns a clear “not found” result the assistant can relay.
- Exceeding 60 calls per minute returns HTTP 429 with the limit stated.
Tips for Better Results
- Be specific about modules. “Search finance documents for the 2025 lease” narrows
documents_search and returns cleaner results than a bare keyword.
- Prefer summaries first.
finance_get_summary or hr_compliance_score give the assistant an overview before it drills into individual records.
- Control the write tools with the connection, not the prompt. Connect read-only (an API key with only Read, or a sign-in that asks only to read) and none of
nonprofit_record_contribution, nonprofit_track_grant, nonprofit_import_contributions, compliance_save_calendar, forms_create_form, workflows_transition, grants_suggest_org_profile or agents_run can run. Every other tool only reads.
