Payment Settings

Choose which payment methods you accept, set receipt defaults and notifications, add charge limits, and preview a Stripe pricing table.

Payment Settings is where you decide what you accept, what a payer sees on their receipt, and what Muin tells you when a payment succeeds or fails.

When you’d use this

  • You want to start accepting bank transfers as well as cards.
  • Receipts are going out with the wrong sender name.
  • You want to be emailed when a payment fails.
  • You want a ceiling on how much can be charged in an hour.

Where it lives

Sidebar → Smart Payments → Settings. The screen is open to owners and admins only.

Eight tabs: Setup guide, Stripe Connect, Payment Options, Payment Methods, Alternative Giving, Webhook log, Security and Compliance. It opens on Stripe Connect.

Payment Options

This is the tab with your actual settings. It does not auto-save: a bar appears with Save changes and Discard, and leaving the page with unsaved edits warns you first.

Accepted payment methods

  • Credit & Debit Cards: on or off.
  • ACH Bank Transfer: on or off. When on, set the Min Amount and Max Amount for an ACH payment, and decide whether to Allow ACH for recurring donations. The option is hidden if bank transfers are not available to your organization.

Fee coverage

  • Allow payers to cover processing fees: gives the payer the option to add the processing cost on top of their payment.
  • Enable by default: appears once the above is on, and pre-ticks the option for the payer.

Receipt defaults

  • Auto-send receipts on successful payment. Turn this off and payers can still request a receipt from the success screen.
  • Default receipt channel: Email, SMS, WhatsApp, QR code, Print, or None.
  • Receipt sender name: the name a payer sees the receipt as being from.
  • Custom receipt message: a line of your own, such as a thank you.

Receipt legal text and the receipt’s look are set elsewhere, under Settings → Branding → Legal & Receipt.

Notifications

  • Notify me on successful payments
  • Notify me on failed payments

Press Save changes when you are done.

Stripe Connect

Use this tab to connect the Stripe account your money is paid into, to check whether you can take payments right now, and to disconnect safely.

Connecting

  1. Go to Sidebar → Smart Payments → Settings. It opens on Stripe Connect.
  2. Pick one:
    • I already have a Stripe account: press Connect existing account, sign in to Stripe and pick the account you already use. Its history, donors and saved cards come with it.
    • Set up a new Stripe account: press Get Started with Stripe and finish Stripe’s onboarding. Have your business details, the bank account for payouts and a government-issued ID ready.
  3. If your Stripe account was created for you by another service, such as a website builder or another giving platform, Stripe will not let Muin link it. Stripe creates a new account instead, and the tab says We’ve set up a new Stripe account for you. Nothing is charged, and your old account keeps its history, payouts and saved donor cards. Press Continue with the new account to finish setup on it.

When you can take payments

Muin takes a payment only while Stripe has turned on both charges and payouts for your account. If Stripe pauses either one, for example during an account review, the tab shows Accepting payments and Payouts to your bank as Working normally or Paused, and says whether there is anything for you to fill in. While either is paused, payers see “This organization cannot accept payments yet.” Refunds still work, and staff can still record cash and checks.

Disconnecting

  1. Press the disconnect action on the Stripe Connect tab.
  2. If money or donors are still tied to the account, Muin stops you with We can’t disconnect Stripe just yet and lists why: a balance still on Stripe, payouts on their way to your bank, open disputes, or active recurring donations. If Muin could not check with Stripe, it says so rather than letting you through.
  3. Clear what is listed, or choose Disconnect anyway and type DISCONNECT to confirm.

What it affects: charges run directly on your connected account, so the cards your donors saved and their recurring gifts stay on that Stripe account. If you later connect a different account, donors have to enter their card again. After you disconnect, the tab shows where to remove Muin in your Stripe dashboard and how to close the account if you want to.

The other tabs

Stripe Connect runs your processor onboarding, and once connected shows your account state, a Tap to Pay terms card and your wallet domains. Cancel setup and a disconnect action live here.

Payment Methods lists the payment methods saved on file, filterable by All, Card or ACH, with search, add and set-default actions.

Alternative Giving connects Every.org so you can accept crypto and stock donations. Look your organization up by EIN (nine digits, no hyphens), accept the terms, then turn it on. The tab also shows recent donations and a fee summary.

Webhook log lists the provider events Muin received, with the provider, event ID, whether the signature was Verified or Rejected, and the payload. This is where you look when a payment happened at the provider but did not appear in Muin.

Security is where you add a charge-limit policy. Press Add policy and set a policy name, max charges per hour, max charges per day and max single charge. With no policy configured, none of these limits apply.

Compliance produces a report for a date range covering transaction totals, refunds (count, amount and rate) and disputes.

Where processing rates are shown

Your processing rates are set and held by your payment provider, not in Muin. Muin shows you what you were actually charged:

  • Smart Payments → Reports → Fee Breakdown gives gross volume, processor fees, platform fees, total fees and net revenue, split by payment method and over time. See Payment Reports.
  • Smart Payments → Payouts → Settlement by fund shows gross, fees and net per fund for each bank deposit. See Payouts.
  • The Compliance tab here reports refund and dispute rates for a period.

The pricing table preview

Sidebar → Smart Payments → Overview → Pricing is a preview of a Stripe Pricing Table, the product-and-price table you build in your Stripe dashboard. It is not a rates screen, and nothing on it is editable in Muin.

To preview one, open the page with your table’s ID in the address, as ?id=prctbl_.... You build and change the table in Stripe; Muin renders it, buyers complete checkout at Stripe, and the resulting payment and payer identity come back into Muin automatically.

There is no menu item for this page. Reach it by its address.

States you may see:

  • “Pick a Pricing Table to preview”: no table ID was given. Create a table in your Stripe dashboard and paste its ID.
  • “Invalid pricing-table ID. Expected format prctbl_*.”, the ID is not a pricing table ID.
  • “Stripe publishable key not configured.”: your environment has no publishable key set. Ask your administrator.

What it affects

  • Turning a payment method off removes it from every payer-facing surface: payment pages, giving pages, links and checkout.
  • Receipt defaults apply to every receipt sent from that point on. Receipts already sent are not rewritten.
  • A security policy refuses charges beyond its limits, so set the ceilings above your real peak, not at it.
  • Connecting or disconnecting Stripe changes whether payments, payouts and reconciliation work at all.

When it goes wrong

“Failed to connect to Stripe. Please try again.” The onboarding handoff did not complete. Start Stripe Connect again; a half-finished onboarding leaves the account unconnected, not broken.

“Failed to update payment settings.” Nothing was saved and your edits are still on screen. Press Save changes again.

“You have unsaved changes.” / “Leave without saving?” You are navigating away mid-edit. Press Stay, then Save changes or Discard.

“Could not load payout readiness summary.” Muin could not read your account’s payout state. Reload; an absent warning here is not confirmation that payouts are enabled.

“Nonprofit not found on Every.org. Check your EIN or claim your profile.” Re-enter the EIN as nine digits with no hyphens. If it is right, claim your organization’s profile on Every.org first.

The ACH option is missing. Bank transfers are not available to your organization. Contact support.

A webhook shows “Rejected”. The signature did not verify, so Muin discarded the event. That is the correct behavior for an unverified event; if it is happening to legitimate events, reconnect the provider so the signing secret is refreshed.

Payments are being refused unexpectedly. Check the Security tab. A charge-limit policy refuses charges past its hourly, daily or single-charge ceiling.

Next step

Once settings are right, take your first payment: Your First Payment. To see what your fees actually came to, see Payment Reports.
