Device Management

Register, monitor, and control your device fleet with Muin's managed device system. Fleet dashboard, remote commands, and alert configuration.

Muin’s Device Management lets you register, monitor, and control tablets, kiosks, and other connected devices from a central dashboard. Whether you have two devices at a front desk or fifty across multiple locations, the fleet dashboard gives you real-time visibility and remote control.

Device Fleet Overview

Fleet Dashboard

Navigate to Platform > Fleet Dashboard for an at-a-glance view of your device fleet:

Metric What It Shows
Total devices Number of registered devices
Online / Offline Current connectivity status breakdown
Active / Idle Devices with active sessions vs. idle
Alerts Devices with unresolved alerts
Battery levels Aggregate battery health across the fleet

Device Registry

The Device Registry at Platform > Device Registry lists every registered device with:

  • Device name and identifier
  • Current status (online, offline, maintenance)
  • Operating mode (kiosk, standard, locked)
  • Tags for grouping and filtering
  • Last seen timestamp

Registering Devices

Adding a New Device

  1. Navigate to Platform > Device Registry
  2. Click Register Device
  3. Enter the device details:
    • Name: A human-readable label (e.g., “Lobby Kiosk 1”)
    • Device identifier: Hardware or serial number
    • Mode: Initial operating mode
    • Tags: Labels for grouping (e.g., “lobby”, “event”, “branch-office”)
  4. Click Register

Device Modes

Mode Behavior
Kiosk Device runs a locked kiosk campaign; no access to other apps
Standard Device operates normally with Muin agent installed for monitoring
Locked Device is remotely locked; displays a lock screen message

Switch modes at any time from the device detail view or via remote commands.

Monitoring Your Fleet

Real-Time Status

The Fleet Dashboard updates in real time. Each device reports:

  • Connectivity: Online/offline status with last-seen timestamp
  • Battery: Current level and charging state
  • Active campaign: Which kiosk campaign is running (if in kiosk mode)
  • Activity: Recent user interactions and submissions

Filtering Devices

Use the registry filters to find specific devices:

Filter Options
Status Online, Offline, Maintenance
Mode Kiosk, Standard, Locked
Tag Any tag you have assigned

Remote Commands

Issue commands to devices without physical access.

Available Commands

Command What It Does
Lock Immediately locks the device with a custom message
Unlock Removes the lock and returns to normal operation
Switch Mode Changes the device mode (kiosk, standard, locked)
Sync Forces the device to pull latest configuration and campaigns
Restart Remotely restarts the device
Wipe Factory resets the device (requires confirmation)

Issuing a Command

  1. Open a device from the registry or fleet dashboard
  2. Click Send Command
  3. Select the command type
  4. Add any required parameters (e.g., lock message)
  5. Confirm and send

Broadcast Commands

Send the same command to multiple devices at once:

  1. From the Fleet Dashboard, click Broadcast Command
  2. Select the target devices or filter by tag
  3. Choose the command
  4. Confirm and send to all selected devices

Command History

Every command is logged with:

  • Command type and parameters
  • Who issued it and when
  • Device response and status
  • Completion timestamp

Alert Configuration

Set up alerts to be notified when devices need attention.

Configuring Alerts

  1. Navigate to the Fleet Dashboard
  2. Click Alert Config
  3. Define alert rules:
    • Offline threshold: Alert when a device has been offline for X minutes
    • Battery threshold: Alert when battery drops below X%
    • Error count: Alert after X errors in a time window
  4. Choose notification channels (in-app, email)
  5. Save the configuration

Activity Logs

Each device maintains an activity log showing:

  • Connection and disconnection events
  • Command execution results
  • Campaign changes
  • Error events
  • User interaction summaries

Access the log from the device detail view.

Additional Workflows

Location-Based Management

Group devices by location using tags:

  1. Tag all devices at a location (e.g., “main-office”, “event-hall”)
  2. Filter the registry by tag to see one location at a time
  3. Broadcast commands to all devices at a location

Planned Maintenance

When a device needs servicing:

  1. Switch the device to Maintenance mode
  2. The device is excluded from fleet status metrics
  3. Service the device
  4. Return to its normal mode when ready

Event Setup and Teardown

For events with temporary kiosk deployments:

  1. Register devices before the event
  2. Assign kiosk campaigns
  3. Switch all event devices to kiosk mode via broadcast command
  4. Monitor during the event from the fleet dashboard
  5. Lock or deregister devices after the event

Tips

  1. Name devices descriptively. “Lobby Kiosk - Building A” is easier to find than “Device 7.”
  2. Use tags consistently. Establish a tagging convention (location, purpose, department) across your fleet.
  3. Set offline alerts for mission-critical devices like payment kiosks.
  4. Review activity logs weekly to spot patterns (frequent disconnections, recurring errors).
  5. Test commands on one device before broadcasting to the full fleet.

Common Issues

Issue Cause Solution
Device showing offline Network connectivity lost Check the device’s Wi-Fi or cellular connection on-site
Command not executing Device is offline when command is sent Commands queue and execute when the device reconnects
Campaign not updating Device has not synced Issue a Sync command from the device detail view
Battery alert firing constantly Threshold set too high Adjust the battery alert threshold in Alert Config
Device stuck in locked mode Lock command was sent accidentally Issue an Unlock command from the device detail view
