HTS Classification
Give each item a tariff (HTS) code in Muin: ask Muin for a suggested code with its reason, confirm it, and keep the history an auditor reads.
Classification gives each item the right tariff code, with the reason an auditor accepts. Muin can suggest a code; a person on your team confirms it.
Suggested, not a ruling. You or your licensed customs broker are responsible for what is filed. This is not legal advice.
When you’d use this
- You are setting up Trade and your items have no HTS codes yet.
- A supplier changed a product and its code needs a second look.
- An auditor or your broker asks why an item carries the code it does.
Classify an item
- Go to Sidebar → Trade → Operations → Classification.
- Under Item, pick the item.
- To get a suggestion, use Ask Muin to suggest a code and click Suggest a code. Muin proposes a code and explains its reasoning. Read it as a starting point.
- Check or change the HTS code (four to ten digits, dots optional), the HTS edition and the Origin.
- Write the Reason: the basis for the code, in words your broker or an auditor can follow.
- Click Confirm.
After you confirm, the screen says “Confirmed. Open POs with this item are re-estimated.”
See an item’s history
Click History on an item. Every confirmed code stays on record with who confirmed it and when. A new confirmation adds a line; it never overwrites the old one.
What it affects
- The duty estimate on every open purchase order line with that item, and the Duty exposure totals.
- The Export shipments check, which reads the classification you confirmed.
- Your importer-of-record duty of reasonable care stays with you, whether a person or Muin proposed the code.
When it goes wrong
| What you see | What it means | How to clear it |
|---|---|---|
| “A newer code was confirmed. Reload.” | Someone confirmed a code for this item while you were editing. | Click Reload, read the new code, then confirm again if you still disagree. |
| “We opened a review task” | The suggestion was not certain enough to stand on its own. | Open the task and have someone who knows the item confirm a code. |
| “No codes recorded for this item yet.” | Nothing has been confirmed for it. | Classify it as above. |
| No Classification in the menu | Your role does not hold the classification permission. | Ask an administrator. |
