Slack Integration

Connect Slack to Muin for real-time notifications, approval workflows, and team collaboration directly from your workspace.

Slack integration brings Muin notifications and actions directly into your team’s communication hub. Approvals, alerts, and updates appear where your team already works—no context switching required.

What You Can Do

Notifications in Slack

  • Approval requests sent as interactive messages with Approve/Reject buttons
  • Document processing alerts when invoices are ready for review
  • Workflow notifications for task assignments and status changes
  • System alerts for important events requiring attention

Actions from Slack

  • Quick approvals using button actions directly in messages
  • Slash commands to check status or trigger workflows
  • User mapping links Slack users to Muin accounts for proper routing

Setting Up Slack

Step 1: Connect Your Workspace

  1. Go to SettingsIntegrations
  2. Find Slack and click Add to Slack
  3. You’ll be redirected to Slack’s authorization page
  4. Select the workspace you want to connect
  5. Click Allow to grant Muin the necessary permissions
  6. You’ll be redirected back to Muin

The connection takes about 5 minutes to set up.

Step 2: Configure Notification Settings

After connecting, configure which notifications go to Slack:

  1. Click Settings on the Slack integration card
  2. Toggle notifications you want to receive:
    • Approval requests – Interactive messages for pending approvals
    • Document alerts – Notifications when documents need attention
    • Workflow updates – Status changes on active workflows
  3. Click Save Settings

Step 3: Map Slack Users to Muin Accounts

For notifications to reach the right people, map Slack users to their Muin accounts:

  1. Click Settings on the Slack integration card
  2. Go to the User Mapping section
  3. Click Auto-Match Users to automatically link users by email
  4. Review the matches and make manual adjustments if needed
  5. Click Save

Tip: Auto-matching works best when Slack and Muin use the same email addresses.

Features

Interactive Approval Messages

When an approval is needed, Muin sends a message to the approver’s Slack DM:

📋 Invoice Approval Request

Vendor: Acme Corp
Amount: $5,250.00
Due Date: Feb 15, 2026
Invoice #: INV-2026-0142

[✓ Approve] [✗ Reject] [View in Muin]

Click Approve or Reject to take action without leaving Slack. The decision is recorded in Muin with full audit trail.

Slash Commands

Use slash commands to interact with Muin from any Slack channel:

CommandDescription
/muin statusCheck your pending tasks, reviews, and approvals
/muin approve <id>Approve an invoice or document (e.g., /muin approve INV-2026-001)
/muin reject <id> <reason>Reject an item with a reason
/muin search <query>Search for documents, invoices, or vendors
/muin helpShow available commands

Thread Replies

When enabled, Muin can reply in threads to keep conversations organized:

  • Approval confirmations appear as thread replies
  • Status updates on documents you’re following
  • Workflow completion notifications

Enable thread replies in SettingsSlackThread Replies.

Connection Status

Check your Slack connection status anytime:

  1. Go to SettingsIntegrations
  2. The Slack card shows:
    • Active – Connection is working
    • Inactive – Connection needs attention
    • Workspace name – Which Slack workspace is connected
    • Linked Users – Number of mapped users

Testing the Connection

To verify everything works:

  1. Click Test Connection on the Slack card
  2. Muin will send a test message to your Slack workspace
  3. If successful, you’ll see a confirmation

Disconnecting Slack

If you need to disconnect:

  1. Go to SettingsIntegrations
  2. Click Disconnect on the Slack card
  3. Confirm the disconnection

Note: Disconnecting deactivates the Slack configuration and stops all Slack notifications. Your user mappings are preserved, so when you reconnect, they will be restored automatically. You may need to reconfigure settings.

Required Permissions

When you connect Slack, Muin requests these permissions:

PermissionWhy It’s Needed
Send messagesDeliver notifications and alerts
Read user infoMap Slack users to Muin accounts
Interactive componentsEnable approve/reject buttons
CommandsProcess slash commands

Muin never reads your Slack messages or accesses channels you don’t explicitly configure.

Troubleshooting

”Connection failed” when adding Slack

  1. Ensure you have admin permissions in the Slack workspace
  2. Check if your organization allows third-party app installations
  3. Try again or contact your Slack workspace admin

Not receiving notifications

  1. Check that your Slack user is mapped to your Muin account
  2. Verify notification settings are enabled
  3. Check if you’ve muted notifications in Slack
  4. Test the connection using the Test Connection button

Approval buttons not working

  1. Ensure Interactive Messages are enabled in settings
  2. Verify your user mapping is correct
  3. Check that the approval hasn’t already been processed

Users not auto-matching

  1. Ensure email addresses match between Slack and Muin
  2. Manually map users that use different emails
  3. Check that users have verified emails in both systems

Best Practices

  1. Map all approvers – Ensure everyone who approves documents has their Slack mapped
  2. Enable thread replies – Keeps approval conversations organized
  3. Test after setup – Always test the connection after initial configuration
  4. Review permissions – Periodically review which users have Slack notifications enabled

Privacy & Security

  • Muin only accesses Slack data necessary for integration functionality
  • All communications are encrypted in transit
  • User mappings are stored securely and scoped to your tenant
  • You can disconnect and remove all data at any time
