How to Use the Muin Compliance Calendar, Step by Step
Answer a few questions about your organization, load your federal and state filing dates, choose who gets reminders, and mark each filing done with its receipt. What each step does and what it costs.
The Compliance Calendar puts the filings your organization owes on one list and reminds you before each one. It covers the federal return, the state annual report, franchise tax, sales tax returns and, for a nonprofit, the state charitable registration renewal.
This guide walks through it from the first answers to marking a filing done.
What it costs
- Basic: $29 a month or $290 a year, for one organization.
- Plus: $49 a month or $490 a year. The pricing page lists what each plan includes.
- Every plan starts with a 30-day trial. No card needed.
You can also see your dates for free, with no account, using the free compliance calendar. It saves nothing and sends no reminders.
Step 1: Answer the questions
Open Products → Compliance Calendar, or Settings → Organization → Compliance. Muin asks:
- your legal name and legal form (LLC, corporation, nonprofit or sole proprietorship)
- the state you are registered in
- how often you file sales tax
- the month your fiscal year ends
- the date you were formed, if you know it
- for an LLC, whether it has more than one owner; for a corporation, whether it elected S corporation status
- for a nonprofit, which Form 990 you file and your EIN
These answers decide which filings apply. An LLC with two owners files Form 1065; a single-owner LLC reports on Form 1040. Some states set the annual report date by the month you were formed, so the formation date matters there.
Step 2: Load your filings
Click Save and load my filings. Muin reads your state’s published rules and adds each filing that applies, with its due date, the agency and the late fee. Each rule names its source and the date it was read.
Muin lists what it did with each one: Added, Already on your calendar, or You removed this earlier. You can save again at any time. Nothing is added twice.
Almost every state has rules today. When the rules do not hold a filing your answers suggest, the calendar names it under Not in our rules yet, so you know to add it by hand on Licenses & Permits.
Muin does not decide what you are required to file. Remove anything that does not apply and confirm with your own advisor.
Step 3: Choose who gets reminders
Every filing sends a reminder by email and push 30, 7 and 1 days before it is due. The person who set up the calendar gets them first. To change that, open Settings → Organization → Compliance → Reminders, choose a person in Send reminders to, and click Save.
Step 4: Mark a filing done
When you file, click Mark filed on the calendar. Enter the date you filed and attach the confirmation or receipt. Muin moves the filing to its next due date and keeps the receipt with it.
When you file on time and the state charges a late fee, Muin counts that fee as a penalty you avoided. You see the total on the Compliance Calendar page.
Some filings wait on another one, such as a license renewal that needs a tax clearance first. Link them on Licenses & Permits with Needs this filed first. While the first one is overdue, Muin will not mark the renewal filed.
Step 5: Check your IRS exempt status
For a nonprofit, open Settings → Organization → Compliance → IRS exempt status and click Check now. Muin looks your EIN up in the IRS exempt organization records and shows whether you are tax-exempt, revoked or not found.
